Māra Ora

A reimagining of community food allotments

We aim to co-develop many Māra Ora sites across our communities of Lower Hutt on both public and private land. Each of our Māra Ora site acts as a central neighbourhood campus that supports whānau learning to grow their own kai year-round for themselves in their own plot, as well as helping with to grow for their local food bank and their community. Each site has a Facilitator, weekly workshops, a community compost hub, a community greenhouse and heihei (chickens) and bees if the Māra Ora whanau are keen. They are places of whānau- led action and learning. Additionally, we provide ongoing employment pathways in the form of internships and education. By partnering with local food banks we ensure community can collaboratively shift from food crisis to kai resilience and kai sovereignty.
